Gearing up for a great term ahead!

Grab the diary, it’s time to get planning as Ability Centre’s therapy team roll out another term jam-packed with some great programs and activities for all ages.

Xcelerate your way to fun and fitness

Our Xcelerate running group kicks off again in Term 2 with a program of individualised training in a fun group setting.

Our therapists offer hands-on support, running skill practice and a home exercise program tailored to each child.

Xcelerate runs twice a week for the entire term, is suitable for 10 to 18 year olds and attendance at both sessions is required. Participants are required tobe able to walk 10 metres unassisted to be eligible. Dates and times for each of our hubs are below:

  • Northern hub (Currambine) – Admiral Park, Heathridge on Monday and Wednesday from 4–5pm.  Contact Helen Watts on 9407 3600 for more details.

Remember to bring a drink bottle and hat. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.

 

Something for book lovers!

Calling all bookworms! Come and try our reading program on offer at our southern hub.

This brand new program aims to build on early literacy skills and children’s natural love of books in a fun and interactive way, with sessions jointly run by a speech pathologist and occupational therapist.

Bookworms kicks off on Wednesday 3 May and runs every Wednesday for six weeks until Wednesday 7 June at the Child & Parent Centre Challis in Armadale. Sessions run from 10am to 11am.

Remember to bring along any communication systems your child has, postural supports or seating systems, and an expectation to have fun!

Time for a chat

Looking for a fun way to help your child develop their vocabulary?

Then why not come along to our Communication Corner program being held at south hub in Canning Vale in Term 2. We’re meeting every Thursday morning for six weeks, starting May 1, 2017.

Sessions will run from 10am – 11am and remember to bring along any communication systems your child has, postural supports or seating system and some morning tea.

We’re also running a group called Little Whispers which is aimed at helping children interact and engage with others, while improving their communication skills. It is suitable for children 18 months to three years of age and is bound to be loads of fun.

Social Superstars

We all love making new friends and your children will too with our new Social Superstars program running at southern hub (Canning Vale) every Thursday afternoon over six weeks.

Time to play

For the little ones playgroup is back so if you’re looking for a play-based learning environment to help support your child’s goals and the chance to meet other families, this could be for you.

Jellybean Playgroup at Currambine runs over eight weeks every Monday from May 1 to June 19, 9.30am – 10.30am at Ability Centre, Unit 5 1 Hobsons Gate, Currambine.

Central Playgroup at Coolbinia will be running on Thursday next term starting Thursday 4 May for eight weeks through to Thursday 22 June. The sessions are one hour starting at 9.45am at the EI Centre at 106 Bradford Street, Coolbinia.

Kinder Gym will keep the little ones busy down Rockingham way, with plenty of activities for 2-5 year olds. Activities will encourage development of jumping, stair climbing, balance, endurance and ball skills.

For all sessions at all venues please make sure you bring along your own morning tea as well as any communication systems and equipment needed.

In the Swim

Improve your swimming, strength and core fitness by joining our water-based sessions in Term 2 via our northern hub.

Every session is individualised and supervised by physiotherapists and community inclusion workers with other participants in the water at the same time. Participants may be working on specific swimming skills or completing hydrotherapy to learn or maintain a skill.

Children and adults can join in sessions at John Butler Primary School in Butler with a variety of times and dates available, beginning Thursday 4th May until Thursday 22nd June.

We’re also running swim sessions at Atwell College over the term for children and adults of any age.

Little Splashers

For the little ones, 0-5 year olds, why not come along to one of our Little Splashers sessions being held in at Coolbinia.

Little Splashers is an opportunity for children to learn through play and fun in the pool. The program kicks off Wednesday 3 May and runs every Wednesday morning until week 9 of term.

Fun and fitness rolled into one!

Improve fitness, agility, balance and strength in a fun group setting in either our Xert, Mini Xert sessions.

Xert Gym is for children and young people aged 9 to 18 years, with weekly sessions run at Coolbinia across the whole of Term 2.

Mini Xert, if perfect for the younger ones with weekly sessions also on offer for children between the ages of 4 and 8.
