NDIS and WA NDIS
The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It’s a new way of supporting people with a permanent and significant disability through giving them access to individualised funding, plans and support. The NDIS will guarantee a level of financial support to people with a disability; currently, in most cases in Western Australia, people with similar levels of functionality may get access to quite different levels of support, depending on their location and the timing or the origin of their disability, in what some what some call the ‘lottery’ of access to services. The NDIS, which is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) aims to ensure that no one ‘slips through the gaps’ in this respect.
The Commonwealth and Western Australian Governments signed Agreements for a two-year trial of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Western Australia. Two different trials are underway in Western Australia – NDIS and WA NDIS.
Both the NDIS and WA NDIS will award individualised funding packages based on a client’s level of need. The person with the disability, together with their family and carers, will be able to choose where they spend their entitlement.
