News & Events

Grab the diary, it’s time to get planning as Ability Centre’s therapy team roll out another term jam-packed with some great programs and activities for all ages.

We have groups running across the metropolitan area. Scroll down to find all the details. Places in all groups are filling fast and bookings are essential.

Registering for a group is an expression of interest only. Please discuss with your Key Contact or Primary Therapist if the group is appropriate for working on your goals and the hours are included in your goal plan. Alternatively, we can provide Fee for Service rates for groups.

Northern Groups

Jellybean Playgroup

Ability Centre North Hub

Every Wednesday from 6th February – 27th March (8 weeks)

Early Intervention Hydrotherapy

  • An introduction to water with your child with familiarisation to swimming and water safety such as blowing bubbles, floating and kicking.
  • Develop motor skills such as rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking.
  • An opportunity to socialise and have fun for children and parents.

Hanen– It Takes Two to Talk®

Parent Education Sessions
Date and Time TBC, 7 weeks, 5 group sessions and 2 individual sessions

For parents of children 5 years and under-identified as having a language delay.

Program aims:

  • Recognise your child’s stage and style of communication.
  • Identify what motivates your child to interact with you so you’ll know how to get conversations started.
  • Adjust everyday routines to help your child take turns and keep interactions going.
  • Follow your child’s lead to build his confidence and encourage him to communicate.

Hanen– More Than Words®

Parent Education Sessions
Date and time TBC, 13 weeks, 10 group sessions and 3 individual sessions

For parents of children 8 years and under on the autism spectrum or with social communication difficulties.

Program aims:

  • How your child learns best and what motivates him to communicate.
  • How to make interactions with your child last longer and be more meaningful.
  • Tips for using pictures and print to help your child’s understanding.
  • Strategies for developing your child’s play skills.

Drum and Beat

School Aged children

4pm – 5pm 

During Drum and Beat sessions, children will come together to have fun and make music. Lead by specialists in music rhythm therapy, the group aims to encourage social interactions and participation through activities such as drumming and electronic beat making.

X-ert Gym Group

  • An opportunity for teenagers to develop strength and fitness at a community gym.
  • Learn how to use gym equipment with support from physiotherapists and community inclusion workers.

X-hale

Ability Centre Central Hub

8–18 years 
Every Monday from 11th February – 1st April
4.00pm – 5.00pm

X-hale is a gym based group for school aged kids with sensory processing difficulties. The class is run Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapists on Monday’s from 4-5pm at the Central hub of Ability Centre. It will incorporate individual exercise programs with a focus on upper and lower limb strength, control and endurance as well as core strengthening. Deep breathing is also a major focus in this group as it is important for self-regulation e.g. reducing anxiety, promoting calmness and alertness. This will be followed by small group work, working on specific skills such as throwing, catching or kicking. The sessions conclude with group relaxation and stretching.

  • Kindy skill development in readiness for starting a new school year.
  • Supports the development of skills needed for kindy with a focus on hand skills and table-top skills e.g. pre-writing, cutting, gluing, construction, puzzles, sensory play.
  • Development of other independence skills required for school e.g. opening lunchbox and school bag.
  • Opportunities to develop social play skills
  • Development of routine and support focussed attention.
  • Provides opportunities to trial a small range of relevant assistive aids and seating options.

For pre-school children who are picky eaters, resistant to trying new foods or will only eat a small selection of foods. This group provides an opportunity for fun, multisensory exposure to food (textures, smells, tastes, messy play) in a safe and positive way.

  • A group for either Adults or Adolescence to develop their independence skills around all things cooking from planning, purchasing the ingredients and making a delicious meal!
  • Separate groups for Adults or Adolescents.
  • Learn how to search, read and break down the steps of a recipe.
  • Build skills for preparing the purchase needed items.
  • Assessment and recommendations of adapted equipment if indicated.
  • Learn about kitchen safety.
  • Develop skills of cooking such as chopping, stirring etc.
  • Meet other people and improve social skills and confidence.
