North Hub Groups

Kindy Readiness

Currambine Community Centre

15, 16, 22, 23 January 2018 (Mon and Tues for two weeks)

This group aims to help 3-4 year old children to transition into kindy and pre-primary comfortably.
The focus of the group is to support Kindy and pre-primary skill development in readiness for starting a new school year.
This will include development of independence skills required for school, for example:

  • Opening a lunchbox and school bag
  • Hand skills and table-top skills (pre-writing, cutting, gluing, construction, puzzles, sensory play)
  • Opportunities to develop social play skills;
  • Development of routine and support focussed attention; and
  • Opportunities to trial a small range of relevant assistive aids and seating options.

Intensives

Ability Centre North Hub, Unit 5, 1 Hobsons Gate, Currambine

15-19 January and 22-25 January 2018

All ages. Work on a specific skill or goal over one, two or three weeks with multiple sessions with one or more therapists (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology). Attend as often as able for intensive skill development.

Literacy Intensives

Ability Centre North Hub, Unit 5, 1 Hobsons Gate, Currambine

9, 11, 16, 18, 30 January & 1 February 2018 (Tuesdays and Thursday)

  • Aimed at children that experience difficulties with reading and writing
  • Children will learn about sounds and strategies to help them to learn to read and spell more efficiently
  • Fun activities and take home practice to support ongoing learning
  • Build confidence and enjoyment in reading in a safe environment

PROMPT Intensives

Ability Centre North Hub, Unit 5, 1 Hobsons Gate, Currambine

8, 10, 15, 17, 29, 31 January 2018 (Mondays and Wednesdays)

Intensive one on one speech therapy to support children with difficulties saying their sounds.

  • Aimed at children of all ages with motor speech difficulties
  • One on one assessment and intervention sessions with a PROMPT trained Speech Pathologist
  • Using touch cues to the articulators (the jaw, lips and tongue) the trained Speech Pathologist will work with your child towards developing oral control and improving oral muscular movements
  • The PROMPT intensives are suitable for a wide range of customers with communication difficulties ranging from articulation problems, motor speech disorder and non-verbal children

Holiday Xert Gym

Ability Centre Central Hub, 106 Bradford St, Coolbinia

Weekdays from 2 January to 25 January 2018

Improve fitness, agility, balance and strength and prepare for community sports and recreation in a fun group setting. Activities are set up in an obstacle course with individual exercises added. Older children are introduced to strength training equipment preparing them for community based strength training. This is an opportunity to meet others of similar abilities in a fun learning environment.

Bike Club

An opportunity to learn to ride a bike, develop and practice your bike riding skills, improve your confidence and independence on a bike in a community setting.

Improve your swimming, develop and work on specific skills, improve your strength, fitness and core strength, manage pain and muscle tone, improve your water awareness and confidence. One on one sessions run by Physiotherapy.

South Hub Groups

Building Blocks: Kindy Readiness

Ability Centre South Hub, Unit 9/190 Bannister Road, Canning Vale

9.30am - 11.00am
16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 January 2018 (Tuesday to Thursday for two weeks)

Ability Centre is pleased to bring Building Blocks, a Kindy readiness group coordinated by Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists.

Building Blocks will develop your child’s fine motor skills, speech and language skills and gross motor skills necessary for a smooth and positive transition into Kindergarten, in a therapy supported environment.

Attendance to this group will also provide an opportunity to meet other parents and families accessing services at Ability Centre.

Social Superstars

Ability Centre South Hub, Unit 9/190 Bannister Road, Canning Vale

10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 January 2018 (Wednesday to Fridays for two weeks)

The new Social Superstars group aims to help children to develop their social skills and make friends comfortably. The goal for group will be aimed at improving social skills such as;

  • Conversation skills – how to initiate conversations with others, asking and answering questions and sharing information with others
  • Turn taking and waiting for your turn
  • Talking on a topic – including semantic language development
  • Listening to others
  • Staying with the group and attending to a task – providing strategies to help manage a situation that may be overwhelming
  • Sharing experiences with others and having fun in a group situation

Bring any communication systems your child has, postural supports or seating systems, and some snacks for sharing

Let’s get social

Our new Speech Pathology group is all about handing out, making new friends and having fun. The goal for group will be aimed at improving social skills such as;

Hit the Beat (for 5-14 year olds)

Every Tuesday, 30 January to 3 April 2018

Hit the Beat is the perfect stepping stone for children who want to participate in dance classes within the community or who just want to learn to dance foundations. There will also be an exciting end of term dance performance.

Bring a water bottle, socks and wear comfortable flexible clothing (no denim).

Yoga Bears (for 5-10 year olds)

Ability Centre South Hub, Unit 9/190 Bannister Road, Canning Vale

17,18,19, 22 and 23 January 2018

Yoga Bears is an interactive exercise group run by physiotherapists aimed at improving core strength, balance, body awareness and ‘whole body’ control. Children learn to develop relaxation and breath control techniques all whilst having fun and making new friends.

Bring your drink bottle and yoga mat (if you have one) and wear comfortable clothing
